About the Recent
Changes to the Site.
2/21/12
We made a number of changes to the Broadcast Steel website recently based on comments
received about the use of the site.
- The most obvious changes were cosmetic. The color scheme was toned down and the
layout was simplified.
- The Contact List and the Send Email sections have been decoupled. A chapter can
use either or both. The Send Email page can now distribute emails to a list of email
addresses provided by the user. When you identify the recipients of your email using
the dropdownbox, the last option is to provide a list. When this options is selected
your list of email addresses can be copied into a textbox. These emails addresses
are not part of the Contact List.
- The Contact List has undergone a major revision but its functionality has been maintained. It
is less complicated and easier to use. We show more information about each contact
and making modifications is quick. Groups and Flags can be changed quickly. Sorting
and filtering the data is simplified.
- In the Send Email section we added the option to insert your own confidentiality
notice or a Post Script of additional text after the main body of the email.
- The Event Registration Setup page has been changed to show a preview of what the
Registration Page will look like. Also it has a similar look and feel as the Send
Email page where you check off the various sections that your want to have included
on the Registration Page.
- We changed the way the email were sent by Broadcast Steel. They are sent from info@broadcaststeel.com
but the reply-to address is the sender. As a result info@broadcaststeel.com receives
an email when the email does not reach the intended recipient. Usually this is because
the email address is incorrect on no longer in use. When we receive these Delivery
Status Notification (Failure) notifications we will flag them using the “Don’t Email”
field in your chapter's Contact List. Your chapter can then review these and either
delete the entry or correct the email address and remove the flag in the “Don’t
email” field.

the site, send an email to John Babson at

About Broadcast Steel
Broadcast Steel was set-up in 2004
to help the Officers of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the
Association of Women in the Metal Industries (AWMI) maintain its database
of its members and those who were to be notified of upcoming chapter meetings. Broadcast
Steel is not associated with AWMI and provides this site on a volunteer basis without
charge to the Chapter Officers of any AWMI Chapters who elect to use it.
Over the years the site has been expanded to handle mass emailing of Chapter event
notifications and Event Registration. This website has been modified so that any
AWMI Chapters can use it.
- A Chapter can maintain its database of contact information in a centralized location
where multiple officers can access and update it. The contact information can be
downloaded into an Excel file for backup and for sending snail mail using mail merge.
- A Chapter can automate the distribution of emails that the chapter sends to members
and non-members. Broadcast Steel can be used to send meeting announcements and newsletter
distributions to some or all of those people in the Contact List. If a Chapter prefers
to not use the Contact List here they can provide a list of email addressed to be
used specifically for that mailing. An email can contain up to 4 attachments. The
emails that are sent using this site use a consistent format and layout but they
can be tailored to the particular requirements of an event or the Chapter. An email describing
an event can use the information directly from the AWMI website. This eliminates
the need to re-enter the event information. Emails announcing an event can be prepared
and sent in minutes.
- Broadcast Steel provides a location on the internet where people can register for
a Chapter's event. Optionally, the site can display the names and the company of
those who have registered. A Meeting Roster is maintained and can be exported to
Excel so that meeting rosters and name tags can be printed. If someone registers
who is not in the Chapter's database, they are automatically added so they can receive
future event notifications.

Broadcast Steel is also used for the
development and testing of new features and technologies under consideration for
application on the Steel Spider website (
www.steelspider.com)
that we also run.
Steel Spider is designed to help steel buyers quickly find steel and contact the
seller to buy the prime, excess and secondary steel they need. Steel Spider helps
North American steel suppliers promote their companies, expand sales and generate
sales leads. Steel Spider is an affordable central trading platform on the internet
where multiple suppliers advertise their steel in stock and available for sale.
Steel Spider provides sellers with additional sales channels to reach current and
new customers. Steel Spider helps steel buyers and sellers make one to one connections
so they can easily and inexpensively communicate, trade, and build relationships
with one another.
We have five platforms on Steel Spider to support steel buyers and sellers:
